Add exotic car rental data to VS Code

Add the free, read-only CarRentalList MCP server to VS Code and ask about exotic car rentals in the U.S.: published daily rates, where a model can be rented, and each company's terms. It answers from 3,485 cars at 167 independent companies in 34 states. No account and no API key.

Add CarRentalList to VS Code

  1. Run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose HTTP, paste the URL and name it carrentallist; or add the file below as .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.
  2. Start the server from the Start action above it in mcp.json, or with MCP: List Servers.
  3. Open Copilot Chat in Agent mode: the CarRentalList tools are in the tools picker.
{
  "servers": {
    "carrentallist": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.carrentallist.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Check that it works

Ask “Which states have the most exotic rental cars?”. Copilot calls browse_locations.

Every answer carries the date of the data (as_of) and links to the carrentallist.com pages of the cars and companies it mentions.

Troubleshooting

No tools in the chat
MCP tools are used in Agent mode only; switch the chat mode to Agent and check the tools picker.
The server does not start
Run MCP: List Servers → carrentallist → Show Output to see the error; the URL must be exactly the endpoint above.

What it can answer

The server's tools cover cars with published daily rates, where a model can be rented, rate statistics, companies and their rental terms, catalog highlights, the monthly company ranking and exotic car news: see the tools reference and the example answers.
